Most people would not naturally put those two words together - cardboard and house. But for one man, those two words mean beauty as well as survival. Don Carlos ("don" is a more respectful title used with someone's first name) is one of my new friends whom I met at the nursing home. We went to visit again yesterday, and he showed us some of his new creations. Rather than feeling sorry for himself and wasting away alone in a nursing home, Don Carlos has chosen to be useful and still live life. A carpenter by trade, he spends his time making beautiful houses and buildings out of carboard and glue. They are amazing and people often give him requests for special items. He also makes some very nice purses out of rope-like material. Not only does this keep him busy and his mind active, but also gives him a little income. He is so interesting to talk to. He knows a lot about many different subjects and has traveled a great many places. He always seems to enjoy our times of singing and prayer as well. Yesterday he told me as we were leaving, "thank you so much for praying for us". Then there is Carmencita - the blind lady with such a sweet spirit. Every time we come she wants us to sing a certain song about feeling God's presence. And she always asks us to pray for her. I love going there, it makes me feel like I'm helping someone. But the best part is watching the kids interact.
I love to see them looking outside themselves to the needs of others.
Well, it's almost time for my English class (7th graders who are failing English class :)
God bless you all in whatever you are doing for Him, until next time...

Wish you all the best there, and be safe (I'm a 1986 graduate of Southern). I worked at the American Embassy there in San Salvador for about three weeks in 2006. It is interesting how the foreign service is somewhat parallel and similar to doing mission work (there is a lot of similarity in the culture). If you are looking for a future career, you should consider the foreign service (State Department offers internships for students, working the summers...and some folks become foreign service officers). Give me a yell at computerkeith@yahoo.com or check out: http://www.state.gov or http://travel.state.gov.
