Yesterday, Sept 15, was independence day here. The whole month is filled with patriotic activities, but yesterday was the big day. There is always a parade in town, where all the local schools march and have their bands and dancers, and whatever else. Our school is considered one of the best, and everyone always waits in eager anticipation to see what new thing they will come up with this year. A lot of our kids were involved in some way or another. My favorite part was the band. But there was also gymnastics and kids in typical dress and other costumes. It was pretty fun to watch, though hot! I've posted a couple pics here, but there are more on my myspace page, for those of you who have that.
While it was neat to see my kids performing and showing off their skills, there were some sad moments. Like seeing the little brothers of one of my girls trying to sell bags of water on the streets. Or seeing looks of hopelessness on the faces of the people. Yes, it was nice to have some fun for a day. But what next? They have no purpose in their lives, only to survive. But for what? I pray that the kids here will realize what a treasure they have to share with their fellow countrymen.
On a side note, please be praying for one of my fellow misisonaries. She is in a very rough situation. She is at an orphanage as well, but not a good one. There is not enough food or space, some of the kids must sleep outside in the rain, the kids are being beaten at times, it's just not a good situation. Please remember them.

I must say, I'm very proud of my kids, and the effort they put into this day. Many of them are very talented and it's great to see them using it.
